Programme for academic promotion

« Sandoz Family Foundation - Monique de Meuron » Programme for Academic Promotion

Well aware of the difficulties faced by the universities and the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology to fill vacant teaching positions, the Sandoz Family Foundation has elected to support the work of the Swiss Federal State and the university cantons by making a number of positions of assistant professors and assistants available to certain universities and to the Ecole Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne.

With this programme to foster academic promotion in the field of higher education and research, the Foundation helps to maintain Swiss academic excellence. The Foundation ensures that beneficiaries of its programme are appointed to tenure track positions.

For this contest, normally held each year, the Universities of Geneva, Fribourg, Lausanne and Neuchâtel as well as the Ecole Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne are invited to present a teaching and research project and a related candidate for a tenure track position. An international jury selects the best project and associated candidate and submits them to the Board of the Foundation, which then makes the final decision.

List of Beneficiaries

The institution whose application is selected (host institution) agrees to insure the successful integration of its chosen assistant professor, to follow his/her work, to support his/her efforts, to ensure correct use of the funds placed at his/her disposal and finally to do everything in its power to assure his/her long-term academic future.

The Sandoz Family Foundation accepts to cover the salaries of the assistant professor in charge of the project and of a full-time assistant; it also provides start up funding. The support of the Foundation is guaranteed for two years. It may be renewed twice for the duration of one year, that is a maximum of four years per selected project.
