Sandoz - Fondation de Famille: News
Following its fourth nomination, the Sandoz Family Foundation's programme for the encouragement of up-and-coming academics is now in full stride
Lausanne, April 23, 2002 - François Vallotton, PhD in Contemporary History (University of Lausanne), has been nominated by the Sandoz Family Foundation for the fourth position of assistant professor which the Foundation will create in the context of its programme for the encouragement of up-and-coming academics. He will take up his new position on September 1, 2002. With this nomination the programme is now fully operational. The current beneficiaries of the programme are: Prof. Thierry Ané (Economics, Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, University of Lausanne), Philipp Heeb (Institute for Zoology and Animal Ecology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Lausanne), nominated in 2000, as well as Jérôme Lacour (Organic Chemistry, University of Geneva), nominated in 2001.
François Vallotton is the author of two books and numerous scientific papers. He specialises in the study of the Swiss publishing profession. His research project, which is now supported by the Sandoz Family Foundation, centres on the study of less well-known and hitherto neglected mass media. Subjects include the popular press or early paperback editions, as well as the beginnings of radio, cinema and other * at the time * new distribution channels. He will also take over a part-time (50%) teaching assignment.
The programme for the encouragement of up-and-coming academics was launched in autumn 1999. The Sandoz Family Foundation were aware of the difficulties that universities would encounter in trying to staff vacant teaching positions in the next five years. For this reason, the Foundation sponsors four professorships for a period of two years respectively. Each position can be prolonged to a total of four years. The positions are seen as an addition to Federal sponsorship and the efforts of the Swiss National Science Foundation for Scientific Research. Apart from a guaranteed salary, the Sandoz Family Foundation grants each professor with a full-time assistant and allocates a generous sum for the acquisition of materials and books. So far, the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva have proposed the most suitable candidates.
The Foundation asked Professor Pierre Ducrey, former Rector of the University of Lausanne, to take charge of the scientific and administrative management of the programme. The successful candidates were all chosen by an advisory board of internationally renowned experts. Their decision has been ratified by the Board of the Foundation.
