Elwin
Located in Moutier, Elwin has been part of the watchmaking hub of the Sandoz Family Foundation since January 2001. It was founded by the third generation of a line of industrialists who who have been specializing in bar turning for the watchmaking industry since 1912, and particularly in making balance staffs.
Elwin is also recognized for its skill in making numerically controlled bar turning machines and designing the software associated with them. As a well-known supplier in precision bar turning, Elwin makes micro-mechanical watch parts. These two specialties - machine building and bar turning - have enabled Elwin to maintain an exceptional level of know-how and to preserve its matchless innovative capacity in the field of production methods; to such an extent that Elwin has developed a new and revolutionary bar turning machine designed specifically for the watchmaking world and its requirements of microscopic precision. The Humard SA company in Delémont, a manufacturer of presses and precision machines (www.humard.com), has undertaken to build and market this new bar turner, the first example of which it plans to deliver as early as 2010. In addition, work is underway to expand Elwin’s production facility in Moutier.
